As we head into the last month of the regular season, I wanted to pass along some general information about our Poco lacrosse and the balance of your lacrosse season. 14 teams have declared for the provincials – 3 in Midget, 5 in Bantam, 2 in Pee Wee and all 4 female teams. They will begin playdowns in late June/early July to qualify. Good luck to all teams. The Pop Styles tournament is taking place in Poco from June 17-21. We have all 4 of our Pee Wee teams involved. There are 24 teams in the tournament in total, including some from Vancouver Island. Extra volunteers are always welcome as it is a big event. If you have participated in a tournament where you want to brag about your team, use our website. We have a Champs Alley where you can post pictures and give reports. It is great reading for those who have done it. For coaches and managers, we will have some information posted shortly on both the coaches and managers sections of our website on our coaching reimbursement program for coaches who don’t have any family members on their team. Please read the specifics on who is eligible. A reimbursement form is also available. We instituted this policy within our executive in March or April, and I must apologize for not communicating this better. This policy was passed around the time that our past president, Dave Clarke, resigned. With the scramble that ensued after this, I did not attend to this as efficiently as Dave would have done in the past. Please talk to your division manager if you have any questions. Lastly, I want to remind our player’s, coaches and parents that our policy of abuse to officials is the same now as it is in April. From my past lacrosse experience, this is the time of year and into July when some of the ugly part of sport becomes apparent. The stakes are higher, but the game is the same. Not all of you know the rules very well. Rather than scream or yell, ask someone who knows for clarification. As a referee for 36 years, I have never done a perfect game and never will. Regardless, all referees are working to call the game the best they can. Coaches and fans screaming at them doesn’t make it any easier and in fact adds an incredible degree of difficulty and anxiety for the younger officials. Cheer on your team and leave the referees alone. I hope all of you enjoy the rest of your lacrosse season and I hope to do a wrap up when the season is done. I would like to welcome all players, coaches, managers, referees, and parents to the 2009 Box lacrosse season with Port Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse. For some of you, it is your first experience with lacrosse and we welcome you and thank you for signing up with our association. For many others who have been with us for any number of years, it is the start of yet another season.
As usual, the weather played havoc with the evaluation process in all divisions. Despite these challenges, the division managers managed to get their coaches through this and have all the teams ready to start the regular season tomorrow. The season is short and hectic, so be prepared. There are new rules in the mini tyke division and we are looking forward to seeing how that will work out. These games will be fun to watch now that the teams are playing 3 on 3 using the half floor.
For 2009, we have 3 Midget teams, 5 Bantam, 4 Pee Wee, 4 Novice, 5 Tyke, 3 Mini tyke and 5 Female teams. The numbers are down from last year, despite numerous recruiting efforts in the schools and community.
We will be hosting 2 longstanding tournaments again this year. The first is the May Day tournament for tyke and mini tyke divisions that will take place on May 9&10. There will be 12 teams in each division. The second tournament is the Pop Styles tournament for the Pee Wee division that will take place from June 17-21. There will be 24 teams in this tournament. For the first time in many years, Port Coquitlam will not be hosting any provincial championships.
We are encouraging teams to use our website as their main source of information. You can use it for your individual teams to let others know how you are doing. Please take advantage of this. Managers will find all the necessary paperwork there as well.
In closing, I hope everyone enjoys his or her season. Remember that every year, we are introducing new executive, coaches and referees. Please be patient and help them through in the early days. Volunteers make a successful association. Don’t stand back and let a couple of people on your team do everything. Get involved and help. You will learn more about lacrosse, meet some new people and most importantly help your child have a better season. Seeing you get involved will only help keep them involved in the game longer.
Regards,
Gord McIntosh 2nd Vice president/Acting president |
